I've been invited by Isabel over at Alphamom to write another guest post over there, so with "Talk Like a Pirate Day" coming up on September 19th, I thought we'd go for some swashbuckling fun!
I've been making these pirate swords for the kids for over two years now and they never grow tired of them. It was only a couple of months ago that I figured out how to make the twirly eight pointed bandanna skirts though. Being a hand sewer, I'm always looking for ways to avoid hemming garments, and this method is a big time saver in that department! Turns out the skirts and swords go together very well for some low budget and very cute pirate girl fun.
To find out what you'll need, and for step by step instructions showing how to put these two projects together, pop over to Alphamom. Here's the link.
Yaaaarrrrrrr!

so lovely!! going over right now!!
I really like this and I think my daughter would to. Who says girls always have to dress up as princesses?!!!
You are an awesome mom. Johnny would love a newspaper pirate sword, and those bandanna skirts are super cute!
I love these ideas. Heading over there now.
The swords are little bit of genius! The kids at our school make their own rules and always wind up banning weapons (real and pretend). I wonder if we can make these an exception?????
freakin' awesome!!!! I want to make these with my boys tomorrow! Maybe I can come up with some pirate pants with the same idea.. love the shirt matching too...
what fun your house is!
That skirts are so cute! Great idea, again! :D I enjoyed to read the interview with you.. :)
WOW! Such a refreshing idea!!! Princess costumes are getting too common and boring...
I've not heard of "Talk like a pirate day" before but I know a bunch of five year olds who would love the idea ... thanks for this one!
Donna :) :)
Hello,
I am new to blogging and I have just started my own and in the process found other little families a bit like our own. I have really enjoyed your blog and I will be keeping up with your creations. Its always a boost to feel connected to other people trying out new ideas even if the connection is the internet. I have a list of things from your blogs that I want to make, and I have already made a mini felt Batcape for me littlie. Keep up the good fun. xxx
Brilliant! I just finished one for my munchkin in less than 20 minutes. Thank you for posting such a great tutorial!!!
Fabulous swords! After seeing this, I made about 25 of the darn things when I was on parent-help duty at my sons pre-school. The teachers were thrilled, haha!
Brilliant, I just love the way you created the handle!
I'm lovin' those skirts. How easy. Off to see the details!
I'm sure I'm not the first to offer, but if you ever need a live in person to wash dishes or clean up paint spills, I'd like to considered for the position in exchange for being in your presence to osmosis-like absorb up your creative wonderfulness. I think you are amazing. Thank you for sharing with and inspiring us mere mortals.
Fabulously simple swords! Very clever. Thanks so much : )
SO. BRILLIANT. I used your swords at my son's 6th birthday party, and they were perfect. Thanks for sharing so many amazing ideas!
I did this too (we have done so many of your ideas for spring holiday here (sept holidays in australia) we did bath foam mural too.

our swords were for being MUSKETEERS!! so there is no end to reasons for using a sword!! My girls watched barbie three musketeers... so I'm thinking of finding another version for them to see
Cool swords! We just had to make some of our own after we saw yours.
I also found a cool spyglass instruction on another blog. It would be sweeeet if one could be made to really work! It might need lenses - do you know where those could be found? http://obsessivelystitching.blogspot.com/2010/03/how-to-make-kids-telescope.html
I stumbled upon your article on Alphamom, and wanted to link back to let you know how I used your tutorial. Thank you for sharing and I can't wait to explore your blog more!

I made one of these for my daughter this weekend. She loves it and has been wearing it non-stop. I shared it on my blog:

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I live in India and a lot of the fun stuff kids take for granted aren't readily available here. So your blog was a lifesaver. I had a pirate party for my son's 6th and made 40 swords and hats, etc. Your idea was fantastic, a lot of fun. I loved that the older kids who came had as much fun as the younger ones - super successful!
